Relay For Life

Last weekend Salmond participated in Relay for Life. Relay for life is a fundraising opportunity for the cancer society to raise awareness for Cancer by running throughout the night. This event happens all around the country and provides the chance to spread awareness of such a phenomenal organisation.

For 12 hours over the night of the 24/25th of April, 25 Salmond residents participated in this event and ran around Otago University. As a team we ran 764 laps around the clocktower and kept the spirit high throughout the night with lots of music and singing. We also had a special guest appearance during the event, Sammy the Salmon, who even ran multiple laps throughout the night. Sammy the Salmon’s feature during the event did not go unnoticed and won the competition on the night for best individual costume.

Prior to the main event we had a fundraiser quiz night at the college for residents to participate in. The quiz night raised a total of $267 which was put towards our team total. This event had a large number of residents coming together, dressed in a variety of costumes to support such a fantastic charity. With many spot prizes throughout the night the most memorable was best costume, which went to Lily and Casey for their beautiful commitment and dedication to Shrek.

As a team we raised just over $800 through donations to individual team members from the college. We are so proud of all the residents who participated in this event and donated to support the Cancer Society.

Degan's Shave for a Cure

My name is Degan and I shaved my head for Cancer.

I have always wanted to shave my head for cancer as it’s a cause I strongly believe in. I wanted to raise awareness and money to help with cancer research all I’d have to do make a big difference is lose some hair. So I thought - bring it on!

After growing my hair out for three years into a nice lengthy mop, I decided that if I was going to shave; now would be the time! And with help from all my donators and the awesome support from my family I managed to raise a total of $1750!!

Easter Volunteering at Quarantine Island

Here at Salmond our Easter Break looked a little different for some. A lucky few were able to get away to the famous Quarantine Island for the night with some Knox residents! Here is a recount of the trip from one of our residents, Jacob Grupp:

"Last Friday a group Knoxies and Mondlings headed out on an overnight volunteering trip to Kamau Taurua/Quarantine Island.

The island makes up what used to be the centre of the volcano that stood in place of the Otago Harbour 16-10million years ago. During the late 19 to early 20 hundreds voyagers traveling into Dunedin on ships would quarantine on the island for various diseases and infections.

Now it is a public recreational reserve with a couple of crumbled ship wrecks, beautiful bays and a growing native forest.

After a little ferry ride from Port Chalmers our crew got welcomed by the island keeper and settled into a cosy lodge from the quarantine times.

We were free to roam.

The next day we spent two hours collecting fire wood and moving gravel in the rain and that was our support work for the trip done.

Quarantine Island is a sensational vibe and there will be further trips later this year. These are organised on the Salmond Volunteering page.

Mandy Lowther wins iconic 26km Three Peaks

Monday 29th March 2021

Mandy Lowther won the U20 section of the 2021 26km Three Peaks race in Dunedin on Sunday 28th March. Alongside her win in the U20 section she was 5th female home overall, completing the course which scales Flagstaff, Swampy Summit and Mount Cargill, in 3 hours and 3 minutes. Awesome effort, awesome result : - - )

Foundation of Salmond College Scholarships

It is always a pleasure to celebrate with the Foundation of Salmond College and Knox College scholarship winners, and in 2021 there were nine scholarship winners from Salmond. Natasha Leslie, Abbie Harrison, Marissa Whittle and Lexi Hulbert are pictured here. They were acknowledged at this special function, along with Alex Harris-Hart, Anh Ha, Ben Clarke, Keegan Playfair and Keely Jones.
